Review: Topo Chico Margarita Hard Seltzer Variety Pack

by Jeff Ellingson

Topo Chico joins Truly and Corona with the launch of their margarita style hard seltzer.  Agave has become a popular ingredient in seltzers that can be categorized into four categories.  First there were seltzers like Funky Buddha, Mas Agave, and Cacti that were made with agave nectar.  Next came seltzers made with tequila like Onda, Mico, Chido, and Mamitas.  A third type is Ranch Water seltzers.  Some like Painted Donkey are made with tequila, some like Lone River, Texas Ranch Water Co. and Dos Equis with agave nectar.  Margarita Style is the latest style.  Like the Original Topo Chico Hard Seltzer, it is produced by Molson Coors in partnership with Coca-Cola Company.  Coca-Cola acquired the Topo Chico brand in 2017.  Top Chico Margarita Hard Seltzer is made from a sugar alcohol base, with filtered carbonated water, lime juice from concentrate, agave syrup, sucralose, natural flavors, and minerals for taste.  Each 12 oz. slim can weighs in with 100 calories and 4.5% alcohol.

Topo Chico Signature Margarita:  The aroma leads with fresh lime juice and agave nectar.  The sweet lime entry builds to a tart lime and agave peak.  It fades with foamy seltzer and lime sherbet flavor finishing with tasty margarita flavor.  If you are looking for a seltzer with real margarita flavor and only 100 calories Topo Chico Signature Margarita is a very good option.

Grade: A

Topo Chico Tropical Pineapple:  The aroma leads with candied pineapple.  Agave nectar and lime follow.  The sweet pineapple candy entry is joined by lime juice and agave syrup building to a tangy pineapple peak.  It fades with juicy sweetened ripe pineapple and finishes with pineapple, lime, and agave syrup.

Grade: B+

Topo Chico Strawberry Hibiscus:  The aroma leads with strawberry puree and agave.  The sweet floral strawberry entry is joined by pear and lime building to a sour red fruit peak.  The tart and tangy fade leaves sour strawberry, hibiscus, agave nectar, saline, and lime juice taste.

Grade: B

Topo Chico Prickly Pear:  The aroma leads with strawberry bubble gum and pineapple.  Lime and agave nectar follow.  The sweet red fruit entry is joined by agave building to a tangy pineapple, lime, and prickly pear peak.  It fades with sour raspberry and finishes with pineapple, lime juice, agave syrup, and prickly pear taste.  Prickly pear is a flavor that’s a little hard to describe, and like star fruit its one I’ve not too often tasted on its own.  From what I recall this is a very good representation of what real prickly pear tastes like, and at any rate its a very tasty seltzer.
