Review: Grey Goose Le Melon Vodka
Grey Goose Le Melon vodka will be introduced on May 1. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a bottle a little early. At a time when other distillers are combining fruit flavors or creating vodka renditions of popular deserts, Grey Goose looked in their backyard and found the Cavaillon Melon. This will be their fifth flavor. It is made in France with soft winter wheat and pristine spring water that has been naturally filtered through champagne limestone from the Cognac region of France. It is distilled using a five column distillation process. Spring water filtered through double reverse osmosis is blended with the vodka before it is filtered through cellulose and carbon. Cavaillon Melons picked in Cavaillon France in July and August are delivered to a parfumerie where the flavors and aromas are extracted. These essential oils are then blended with their original vodka. For those including myself who are unfamiliar with the Cavaillon melon it is a small variety of the Cantaloupe. When ripe it has a lime green skin, vertical lines, and creamy orange flesh. A cantaloupe aroma leaps from my glass. Additional passes bring out a hint of banana. The flavor starts with a subdued fresh melon and builds in intensity as it warms in my mouth. At its peak, I pick up notes of banana before it fades with a mild to medium mouth warming, a hint of almond, and vodka flavor on the semi dry finish. The flavor here is very fresh and natural but if 80 proof is a little strong try a Melon Royal. Start with a rock glass, add ice, 1 1/2 ounce Grey Goose Le Melon, 3 ounce Sprite, and garnish with a melon slice.
