Review: Kona Spiked Island Seltzer

Kona Spiked Island Seltzer was released March 28, 2020 and is available in a four flavor 12 can variety pack.  Those flavors include Tropical Punch, Starfruit Lime, Strawberry Guava, and “POG”, Passionfruit Orange Guava.  After shoveling the 11 inches of snow that fell yesterday on my homes driveway, I only wish I was sampling this at their brewpub in Kailua-Kona or Hawaii Kai.  Kona Spiked Island Seltzer is made by Kona Brewing Company, one of eight breweries that make up Craft Brew Alliance.  The others include Redhook, Widmer, Omission, Wynwood Brewing Company, Cisco Brewers, Appalachian Mountain Brewery, and Square Mile Cider Co.  Kona Brewing Company was originally founded by Cameron Healy and his son Spoon Khalsa in 1994.  Craft Beer Alliance acquired Kona Brewing Company October 2010, and Anheuser Busch acquired CBA in 2019.  Because of this relationship Kona brews their beer and Spiked Island Seltzer at their flagship brewery in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island and at Widmer Brothers Brewery in Portland Oregon, and Redhook Ale Brewery in Portsmouth New Hampshire.  The ingredients are identical at each location and minerals are added to mimic the fresh water available in Hawaii.  Each can of Kona Spiked Island Seltzer is made with carbonated filtered water, alcohol from organic cane sugar, and natural flavors, and each 12 oz. can weighs in with 5% alcohol, 100 calories, 0 Sugar, and 2 Carbs.

Kona Spiked Island Seltzer Tropical Punch:  The tropical fruit aroma leads with cherry, orange, and pineapple.  Additional time in the glass brings out grape.  The flavor follows the same profile.  Kona is able to accomplish this without an oversweet taste.  It fades with tangerine and finishes with sour cherry, tangy pineapple, and orange peel.

Kona Spiked Island Seltzer Starfruit Lime:  The aroma leads with lime.  tropical fruit follows.  Additional time in the glass brings out pineapple and pear.  The sweet lime citrus entry builds to a tropical fruit peak.  It fades with sour starfruit and fresh lime.

Grade: B+

Kona Spiked Island Seltzer Strawberry Guava: The aroma is fresh strawberry and guava.  The strawberry guava entry is very natural tasting, building to a tart strawberry, ripe guava peak.  It fades with sour strawberry and finishes with subtle carbon seltzer, grapefruit, strawberry, and guava taste.

Grade: B+

Kona Spiked Island Seltzer Passionfruit Orange Guava:  The tropical fruit aroma has orange, guava, and floral passionfruit.  Additional time in the glass brings out banana and a hint of fresh cut Christmas tree  The orange and passionfruit entry builds to an orange sherbet and guava peak.  It fades with a creamy tropical fruit blend featuring all three fruit flavors, finishing with sour passionfruit taste.
