Review: AQAVE

by Jeff Ellingson

AQAVE Craft Hard Seltzer has released in April and is currently only available in Los Angeles.  Distribution throughout California will soon follow.  I was instantly drawn to the colorful package design and selection of flavors.  AQAVE was created by two friends who grew up on different ends of the state, one Northern, the other Southern California.  Quinn Duffy and Ari Moreh sampling dozens of blends and spent months developing everything from the flavor profile, and ingredients, to package design.  Each can of AQAVE is made with carbonated filtered water, alcohol from dextrose and organic agave nectar, and citric acid.  AQAVE Coastal Citrus adds Tangerine extract, and Lemon extract.  AQAVE Island Groove blends Pineapple extract, and Coconut extract.  AQAVE is crafted by Absolution Brewing Co. in Torrance California.  A portion of all profits from 2021 will go to All Peoples Community Center.  They have been serving South LA since 1942.

AQAVE Island Groove:  The aroma leads with fresh pineapple juice.  Creamy coconut and agave follow.  The sweet pineapple entry builds to a juicy pineapple and creamy coconut peak.  Agave arrives joining the fresh blend of pineapple and coconut.  It fades with foamy coconut and finishes with coconut ice cream, shredded fresh pineapple and organic agave.

Grade: A+

AQAVE Coastal Citrus:  The aroma leads with just peeled tangerine and fresh sliced lemon.  Additional time in the glass brings out agave nectar.  The juicy tangerine entry is joined by lemon and agave building to a sweet tangerine and tart lemon peak.  It fades with a foamy blend of the three leading players and finishes with tangy tangerine, sour lemon, and organic agave nectar taste.

Grade: A-

Made in Southern California

The Bottom Line:  Quinn and Ari did an amazing job with these first two AQAVE flavors.  It is hard to create a hard seltzer with just one flavor ingredient.  They combined two.  What I especially like is they were able to craft a seltzer with flavor separation.  I taste both the coconut and pineapple and tangerine and lemon as real individual fresh fruit flavors.  Finally I also prefer the agave finish to the burnt carbon seltzer aftertaste I get from some brands.  Until they increased distribution it looks like my trips to LA will include a trip to In-N-Out Burger and a visit to a local liquor store to pick up a couple six packs of AQAVE.
