Review: Fundays Hard Seltzer

by Jeff Ellingson

Fundays Hard Seltzer was recently released and is currently arriving at Target stores throughout the US.  It is produced by Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company in Houston Texas.  Buffalo Bayou also makes their own, Buff Brew Hard Seltzer.  Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co. was founded in 2011 by Rassul Zarinfar and Ryan Robertson.  They opened their brewery in an abandoned warehouse once used to store boats.  Since then they have brewed over 100 different beers including Wake N Bake, Crush City IPA, Morning Wood, Hoppy Copper, Legalize IPA, Great White Buffalo, and Lighten Up.  Fundays Hard Seltzer is sold in a 12 can “Mixtape” four flavor variety pack with unique names and flavor combinations.  Those include Yard Games, with Lemon Lime and Pomelo, Fresh Picked, with raspberry lemon, and blackberry, Skinny Dip with Passion Fruit, Guava, and Dragon Fruit, and Garden Party with Honeysuckle, and Orange Blossom.

Yard Games:  The aroma leads with a citrus blend.  Additional time in the glass brings out lime, pomelo, and floral notes.  The sweet lemon entry is joined by orange and lime building to a tart unsweetened citrus peak.  It fades with floral notes and whole pomelo, and finishes dry with sour lemon, tangy orange, and white grapefruit, leaving pomelo taste.

Grade: C+

Fresh Picked:  The aroma leads with fresh raspberry.  Lemon and blackberry follow.  The sweet blackberry entry is joined by lemon juice building to a juicy berry peak.  It fades with sour lemon and ripe berry and finishes dry with carbon seltzer, lemon peel, and tart raspberry taste.

Grade: B-

Skinny Dip:  The aroma leads with passion fruit, peach, kiwi, and grapefruit peel.  Additional time in the glass brings out dandelion green.  The sour citrus entry is joined by dragon fruit, pear, and pineapple building to a sour passion fruit peak.  It fades with spicy notes of dandelion and finishes dry and bitter with sour citrus, sour peach, and peppery mango taste.

Grade: C

Garden Party: The aroma leads with floral notes.  Additional time in the glass brings out honey and orange notes.  The sweet floral entry builds to an orange blossom peak.  It fades with tangy orange and honey flavor and finishes dry with orange peel and floral taste.

Grade: C+

The Bottom Line:  Beers have dozens of styles including Pilsners, Lagers, Ale’s, IPA’s, Porter, Stout. Wheat, and Sours.  I don’t care for every style of beer, and as the hard seltzer market grows and matures I’m not going to like every style of hard seltzer.  Fundays Hard Seltzer is like no hard seltzer I’ve tried, and if the flavor profile of Fundays becomes a style of hard seltzer it will be one I will take a pass on.
