Review: Cacti Agave Spiked Seltzer

by Jeff Ellingson

Cacti Agave Spiked Seltzer was released March 2021 as a collaboration between Rapper Travis Scott and Anheuser-Busch.  Collaborations are nothing new for Travis Scott, as he has already collaborated with Nike, Dior, McDonalds and Sony Playstation.  His most famous collaboration came with Kylie Jenner in the form or their daughter Stormi Webster.  Cacti is currently available in three flavor varieties including Strawberry, Lime, and Pineapple.  Like the other Anheuser-Busch hard seltzer brands, Cacti is made from a cold fermented cane sugar alcohol base with malted rice and natural flavors.  Cacti adds agave syrup and lime juice and weighs in at 7% abv. with 150 calories.  Agave nectar/syrup has recently become a popular ingredient and can be found in several hard seltzer brands.  Cacti is one of three brands we will review this weekend.

Cacti Agave Lime Spiked Seltzer: The aroma leads with lime juice.  Agave follows.  Additional time in the glass brings out mosquito repellent notes.  The lime juice entry builds to a sweet and tart lime juice and agave nectar peak.  There is more of an alcohol feel than a typical hard seltzer.  This combined with the agave syrup gives this a flavor akin to tequila.  The creamy malted rice fade leaves lime juice, lime aftershave, agave, and burnt rice taste.

Grade: B-

Cacti Agave Strawberry Spiked Seltzer: The aroma leads with strawberry puree.  Maple and agave syrup follow.  The strawberry bubblegum entry is joined by agave nectar.  It fades with sour strawberry gummy and finishes semi-dry with bittersweet grapefruit peel, agave syrup, maple, strawberry licorice, and alcohol taste.

Grade: C

Cacti Agave Pineapple Spike Seltzer:  The aroma leads with juicy pineapple.  Additional time in the glass brings out agave and mint notes.  The sweet pineapple entry is joined by agave building to a tangy pineapple agave peak.  It fades with canned pineapple, alcohol, and agave.  The finish is semi-dry and bittersweet with sour pineapple, mint, grapefruit peel, and agave syrup taste.

Grade: C+

The Bottom Line:  Some hard seltzer use agave to complement the fruit flavor, with Cacti the agave takes on more of a lead role.
