Review: Founders Mas Agave Hard Seltzer

by Jeff Ellingson

Founders Mas Agave Hard Seltzer was released October 2020.  Founders Brewing Company was co-founded by Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers in a 9800 square foot brewery in downtown Grand Rapids Michigan in 1997.  Some of the beers that made the brand famous include All Day IPA, Solid Gold Lager, Centennial IPA, Unraveled IPA, 4 Giants IPA, Breakfast Stout, Founders Porter, Rubaeus Raspberry Ale, and Dirty Bastard.  Spanish Brewer Mahou San Miguel acquired a 30% stake of Founders December 2014 and an additional 60% January 2020. The inspiration for the brand came from the wife of the VP of Marketing for Founders Brewing Company.  She felt Founders Mas Agave Barrel aged Imperial Gose beer series with an ABV between 9.7 and 10 was a little strong for her liking.  When she cut the beer with seltzer water she loved it.  After that the Brewmaster and R&D Brewer spent months honing their hard seltzer recipe.  The 11-14 ingredient list, found on each can of the three varieties of Mas Agave Hard Seltzer starts with filtered water and a sugar cane and organic blue agave nectar alcohol base.  Founders Mas Agave is sold in a 15 can three flavor variety pack.  The three flavors include Lime, Strawberry and Grapefruit.

Founders Mas Agave Lime:  Is made with 19% juice from a juice concentrate blend of apple juice, pear juice, and lime juice.  Natural lime flavor, sea salt, citric acid, and lime zest oil round out the ingredient list.  Pours to a pale golden chardonnay color.  The aroma leads with sliced lime wedge.  Sour apple follows.  The sweet and saline apple juice entry is joined by juicy pear and lime juice that builds to a juicy and tart fruit juice peak.  It fades with agave nectar and finishes with sour green apple, sweet pear, tangy lime and agave taste.

Founders Mas Agave Grapefruit: Is made with 10% juice from a juice concentrate blend of apple juice, pear juice, and grapefruit juice.  Natural flavors, citric acid, sea salt, grapefruit zest oil and vegetable juice for color are added.  The aroma leads with grapefruit.  The sweet fresh grapefruit entry is joined by saline, agave, and sour apple building to a juicy grapefruit and sour grapefruit and apple juice peak.  It fades with pear juice and agave nectar.  The finish is salty and semi-dry with apple juice bittersweet grapefruit zest and agave nectar taste.

The Bottom Line:  I was leaning towards a higher grade with all three varieties after my initial few sips but with all hard seltzers I complete the entire can before awarding my final grade.  Over the 12 ounce coarse the fruit juice flavor becomes a little overwhelming.
