Review: Honcho Spiked Agua Fresca

Honcho Spiked Agua Fresca was released by the creators of Common Cider.  After placing three of her crafted ciders in the Top Ten at a 2012 Reno Nevada homebrew competition, Fran Toves launched Common Cider.  Honcho Spiked Agua Fresca was introduced June 2020, and is inspired by Latin American recipes and ingredients.  They have added a modern alcohol kick.  Honcho is made with an all natural fruit wine base, fresh water from the Sierra Mountains, and flavor specific ingredients I will list below.  Agua Fresca translates to cool waters.  Agua Fresca’s originated in Mexico and are typically sold by street vendors.Honcho Blueberry Lemon:  Made with Blueberry Juice from concentrate, lemon juice, and natural flavors.  It pours to a blueberry juice color.  The aroma leads with blueberry pie.  Lemonade follows.  Additional time in the glass brings out blueberry cheesecake notes.  The tart blueberry entry is joined by lemon juice building to a blueberry muffin with lemon glaze peak.  It fades with sour lemon juice and finishes with blueberry yogurt and a squeeze on lemon.

Grade: A-

Honcho Prickly Pear:  Made with prickly pear juice from concentrate, lime juice, and natural flavors.  It pours to a golden yellow color with a thin white head.  The aroma leads with wine yeast and bubble gum.  Additional time in the glass brings out fruit wine notes.  The red berry and bubblegum entry builds to a sour dough, sweet watermelon, and strawberry peak.  It fades with sour raspberry, and tropical fruit flavors including pineapple.  The sour fruit finish leaves fruit wine taste.

Grade: B 

Honcho Mango:  Made with mango juice from concentrate, lime juice, and natural flavors.  The aroma leads with natural mango.  Tropical fruit with pineapple and fruit wine follows.  The sweet pineapple and mango entry builds to a ripe mango peak.  It fades with sour tropical fruit and finishes with tangy mango, bittersweet apple, and fruit wine taste.

Grade: B+

The Bottom Line:  Honcho Spiked Agua Fresca does a nice job bridging the gap between Hard Seltzer and Fruit Wine Spritzer.  The fruit flavor, especially the blueberry and mango is real fruit not oversweet fruit juice.
