Review: San Juan Seltzer Pacific Northwest Variety Pack

by Jeff Ellingson

San Juan Seltzer was inspired during a girls weekend at founder Katy Enger’s family home in the San Juan Islands.  Their first flavor was launched June 2018.  It is crafted in the former Schooner Brewing Company building on 1st Ave. South in Seattle.  San Juan Seltzer is made from a cane sugar base with natural fruit essences, natural flavors, and natural organic acids.  Each 12 oz. slim can weighs in with 4.2% alcohol, and 85 carbs.  San Juan Seltzer also produces a Spiked Punch, Spiked Lemonade, and Seltzer Cocktails variety pack.

San Juan Fuji Apple Seltzer:  The aroma leads with fresh sliced Fuji apple.  Additional time brings out some carbon seltzer notes.  The sweet juicy apple entry builds to a tart apple peak.  It fades with sour apple, creamy seltzer, and sour dough bread and finishes tart crisp and refreshing with apple crisp and carbon seltzer taste.

Grade: B+

San Juan Raspberry-Cran Seltzer: The aroma leads with fresh picked raspberry and cranberry juice.  The sweet raspberry entry is joined by tart cranberry juice.  It fades with creamy seltzer, and raspberry sherbet, and finishes with sour dough bread, raspberry gummy, and sour cranberry, leaving carbon seltzer taste.

Grade: B

San Juan Rainer Cherry Seltzer: The aroma leads with maraschino cherry and yeast rolls.  The sweet dried cherry entry builds to a cherry gummy peak.  It fades with creamy seltzer, tart cherry, and sour dough, and finishes with sour cherry, and carbon seltzer taste.

Grade: B+

San Juan Huckleberry Seltzer: The aroma leads with wild blueberry.  Carbon seltzer follows.  The sweet huckleberry entry builds to a tart peak.  It fades with sour blueberry, creamy seltzer, and sour dough.  The finish leaves sour blueberry, lemon peel, and carbon seltzer taste.

Grade: C+

The Bottom Line: It seems the recent trend is to develop sweetened hard seltzers.  It’s good to see there is still a hard seltzer out there with natural flavors and old school seltzer taste.
