Review: Casa Del Sol Reposado

by Jeff Ellingson

All right I’ll admit it we moved up our planned review of Casa Del Sol Reposado after the dust up on a recent episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.  Apparently Kathy Hilton and her daughter Nicki Hilton have joined Co-Founder Eva Longoria as investors in the brand.  Casa Del Sol Reposado tequila is made from 100% blue weber agave grown in the Altos de Jalisco region of Mexico.  The tequila is crafted at Compania Tequilera by Head of Production Alejandra Pelayo, the protege and god daughter of Francisco Alcaraz, the creator and Master Distiller of Patron.  Casa Del Sol translates to House of the Sun.  Once distilled the tequila rests for a minimum of four months in select French Limousin oak cognac barrels once used to mature Martell Cognac.  The nose leads with vanilla.  Sweet nutmeg, butterscotch, agave, raisin, and French oak follow.  The sweet agave and vanilla entry has a soft mouth feel.  Grape arrives building to a wood spice, grape bubblegum, and vanilla peak.  It fades with oak and butterscotch, finishing semi-dry with baking spice, bittersweet grape soaked French oak, vanilla, sweet agave, and white pepper.    Casa Del Sol is not a bad tasting spirit but is it a little light on agave, and the more I sip, the more the grape and French oak flavor dominate.  That said, with hundreds of tequilas already on the market today Casa Del Sol was not crafted to be a me too tequila.  I expect Casa Del Sol Reposado to be a lightning rod tequila with old school tequila drinkers giving this a thumbs down, while others may include Casa Del Sol Reposado on their play list.  I’m somewhere in the middle.
