Review: Onda Tequila Seltzer Tropical Collection
Onda Tequila Seltzer Tropical Collection is the third, four flavor 8 can mix pack of tequila seltzers produced by Onda. The others include their Paradise and Classic Collection. Onda was launched July 2020 by Noah Gray, Max Dworin, Kelli Adams, and Shay Mitchell. Onda translates to wave or good bye. June 2022 they received a $12.5 million growth investment from a group of heavyweights including Aria Growth Partners, 25Madison, Revolve, and Clayton Christopher the Founder of Sweet Leaf tea, and Co-Founder of Deep Eddy Vodka. Along the way the formula has also changed. The alcohol content has been reduced from 5% to 4.5%, and Onda has moved their canning line from Mexico to Pennsylvania. Onda is made from a blanco tequila base with carbonated water, natural flavors, and real juice. The previous flavors all included lime juice and flavor specific juice. These new flavors appear to follow the same formula.
Onda Tequila Seltzer Coconut: The aroma leads with toasted coconut. Lime, agave, burnt carbon seltzer, and floral notes follow. The sweet coconut entry is joined by earthy agave, and burnt carbon building to a lime and creamy coconut peak. It fades with agave, lime juice, and vanilla and finishes with carbon seltzer, coconut, lime, and agave.
Grade: B-
Onda Tequila Seltzer Peach: The aroma leads with fresh sliced peach. Additional time brings out agave and carbon seltzer. The sweet peach entry builds to a juicy peach, tart lime, and agave peak. It fades with agave and lime and finishes with burnt carbon seltzer, lime juice and agave.
Grade: B
Onda Tequila Seltzer Guava: The aroma leads with guava, lime, agave, and carbon seltzer. The guava and lime entry is joined by agave at the midpoint. It fades with carbon seltzer and lime and finishes with lime juice, agave, and carbon seltzer. Not a bad tasting seltzer but the guava never really pops through the lime.
Grade: C+
Onda Pineapple: I had previously reviewed Onda Pineapple but they have changed the formula since then so I’m excited to see how that changed the flavor profile. The aroma leads with sliced Hawaiian pineapple. Additional time brings out lime juice and agave. The sweet pineapple entry is joined by lime and agave building to a lime juice and agave peak. It fades with pineapple, lime juice, and earthy agave. It finishes with lime, pineapple, agave, and carbon seltzer.
Grade: B+
The Bottom Line: All four flavors have more lime flavor than agave and the carbon seltzer taste is a little distracting, particularly with the Coconut and Peach flavors.
