Review: Strait Up Killer Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

Strait Up Killer Vodka is crafted at James Bay Distillers in Everett Washington.  It is inspired by killer whales in their natural environment, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, just north of the distillery.  Ernest and Leigh Troth began distilling in 2018 and sold their first bottle of Galloping Goose Canadian Whiskey September 2019.  This unique distillery not only barrel ages their whisky in Chilliwack BC Canada, but they have permits from the United Kingdom to import scotch whisky in bulk to blend their own brands of Scotch.  They also produce 5 different gins and two seasonal flavored vodka’s made from the Strait Up Killer Vodka base.  Those two flavored vodkas include Choco Haze made with organic dark chocolate from Ecuador and Hazelnuts from Oregon.  A second flavored vodka, Cherbanero is made with a black cherry and habanero infusion.  Strait Up Killer Vodka is distilled six times from a blend of wheat and corn using proprietary European techniques.  It is then charcoal filtered and cut to proof with water from the Cascadia aquifer.  The aroma leads with flakey pastry and butterscotch.  The sweet vanilla entry is joined by boiled corn building to a creamed corn and caramel pastry peak.  It fades with vanilla and finishes with citrus, mineral, white pepper, and anise.
