Review: Red Cedar Spirits Apple Vodka
Red Cedar Spirits Apple Vodka is distilled from Michigan grown apples and not an apple flavored vodka. Red Cedar Spirits also crafts a vodka made from corn and another from wheat along with several Gins, Bourbons, Whiskey, and Brandy. The Red Cedar Spirits brand was formed in 2012 by Kris Berglund, Diane Holman, and Mike Beck. Kris a Michigan State University Professor of Agriculture and Engineering developed the Artisan Distilling Program at MSU. He is married to Diane Holman who started Working Bugs, a company the uses fermentation processing to produce bio-based chemicals. Kris also worked on many projects with Mike Beck of Uncle Johns Fruit House Winery & Distillery. Red Cedar Spirits Apple Vodka is crafted from apple juice straight from local apple growers. It is small batch distilled on a custom Carl still. The aroma leads with smashed apple, yeast rolls, caramel, and anise. The sweet apple and vanilla entry builds to a caramel apple peak. It fades with caramel and candy apple, and finishes with Golden Delicious apple flavor, a flash of alcohol heat, and a peppery sting, leaving apple skin and anise taste.
