Review: Baileys Chocolate

by Jeff Ellingson

Baileys Chocolate will soon be arriving at you favorite liquor stores.  We were able to get our hands on a bottle a little early.  For years Baileys has only sold Baileys Chocolat Luxe and Baileys with a hint of Orange Truffle Irish Cream Liquor across the pond.  The good news is they are about to drop Baileys Chocolate in the US.  This appears to be the same formula used to craft Baileys Chocolat Luxe as both weigh in with 15.7% alcohol and have the same play list of ingredients.  The other Baileys Irish Cream Liqueurs tip the scale with 17% alcohol.  The bad news is Baileys Orange Truffle no longer appears on the Baileys UK website so we may never see it here.  When looking at Baileys Chocolate your first question may be, “Isn’t Bailey’s Original already chocolate”?  It is but Baileys Chocolate is made with real Belgian chocolate, chocolate flavor, Irish dairy cream, Irish spirits, including fine Irish Whiskey, and natural flavors.  Baileys Chocolate joins Coole Swan Irish Cream Liqueur as the only Irish Cream liqueur made with real Belgian Chocolate.  Black Irish White Chocolate is made with Belgian white chocolate.  Baileys Chocolate pours to a dark chocolate fudge color.  The aroma leads with dark Belgian chocolate.  The thick dark chocolate entry has a very rich and creamy mouth feel building to a bittersweet dark chocolate pudding peak.  It fades with Death by Chocolate cake and dairy cream and finishes with subtle whiskey flavor peaking through a Godiva Midnight Swirl ice cream wall of flavor.  Baileys Chocolate has so much rich decadent Belgian dark chocolate flavor it should come with a warning label.
