Review: Tequila 1349 Blanco

by Jeff Ellingson

Tequila 1349 Blanco was founded by Lizzy Lopez who in 2016 was gifted 1 acre of family land in the Highlands of Arandas Jalisco.  On that land 71 blue agave plants were planted in 19 rows, 1349 in total.  These 1349 plants were the inspiration for the name, and the starting point of her tequila.  Each year after she planted more and more.  After visiting 40 distilleries Lizzy partnered with Cesar, Alvaro, and Jose Aceves, third generation maestros tequileros in 2020.  After sampling dozens of combination of tequilas they created Tequila 1349.  Tequila 1349 is crafted at Casa Tequilera de Arandas.  This distillery makes several tequila brands including Penta, Comisario, 1921, and Lala.  Tequila 1349 is made with 100% agave grown in red volcanic soil.  The hand selected agave is slow cooked at low pressure for 24-36 hours in autoclave ovens.  Once extracted the agave juice and yeast is serenated with classical music and double distilled in copper pot stills.  Once complete the tequila rests for 25 days before bottling.  The spent agave fiber is used for livestock feed and multi purpose briquettes.  The aroma leads with fresh agave.  Additional time brings out warm muffin, watermelon and lime.  The sweet agave and lime entry is joined by unfrosted vanilla cupcake building to a high brix count agave, watermelon, and lime peak.  It fades with lime and finishes with a sprinkle of black pepper, watermelon, buttery agave, and whole orange taste.  Don’t let the price of Tequila 1349 Blanco convince you this is not a premium tequila because the taste and finish scream otherwise.
