Review: Gypsy Vodka
Gypsy Vodka was launched 2015 by twin brothers Michael and Adam Kazanowski. The Gypsy Vodka website claims Gypsy is the number 1 selling vodka in Michigan. After graduating from Michigan State the twins moved to Breckenridge Colorado in search of a new perspective after discovering a conventional career wasn’t for them. While skiing they met a spirits distiller. His passion for the art of distilling inspired them to create they own spirits. They knew they needed money to achieve this goal so the brothers started working at music festivals all over the country. To save on expenses they lived in a van and crashed on a friends couch. This gypsy lifestyle inspired the Gypsy name. After launching the brand in Colorado they moved back to Michigan and built the High Five Spirits distillery in a 42,000 square foot facility that was formerly the Bay Harbor Equestrian Center. It sits on 20 acres overlooking Little Traverse Bay and Bay Harbor Village. They also produce Mackinac Island Rum, Bourbon, Apple Pie Vodka, and Banana Rum. The state of the art stills were built by Detroit Still Works. After 50 different formulas they had their first spirit, Gypsy Vodka. Gypsy Vodka is distilled six times from Non GMO Michigan grown sweet corn and artesian spring water from Northern Michigan. The aroma leads with boiled sweet corn. Additional time brings out citrus notes. The sweet corn and vanilla entry is joined by chewable baby aspirin building to a sugar cookie peak. The fade is milky with lemon cake flavor finishing semi-dry and peppery with lemon peel, anise, and white pepper.
