Review: Hussong’s Platinum Tequila

Hussong’s Tequila is named for Hussong’s Cantina in Ensenada Mexico, where Juan Hussong opened his cantina in 1892 and started serving his own hand made tequila.  Husson’s Cantina is one of several places that claim to have invented the Margarita.  Hussong’s tequila through the years has been distilled at several distilleries.  Hussong’s Platinum Tequila is currently produced at Destiladora del Valle de Tequila.  It is made from 100% agave grown in both the Highland and Lowland region of Jalisco Mexico.  50% of the agave is steam roasted in centuries old stone walled brick ovens for 45 hours.  The other half is cooked in stainless steel autoclaves for 35 hours.  The cooked agave is shredded and the juice enters an oxygenation machine to enhance it’s smoothness before fermenting for 50 hours with natural occurring yeast in stainless steel tanks.  The spirit is double distilled then aged in American White oak bourbon barrels for 15 months, filtered to remove the color, and chill filtered down to -2 degrees Fahrenheit for 12 hours.  Once the tequila warms to room temperature it is hand bottled in a clay jug.  The aroma leads with vanilla, baking spice, and cooked agave.  Additional time brings out toasted coconut, toffee, pineapple, lime and black pepper.  The sweet agave, cinnamon, and lime entry is joined by vanilla building to a tropical vanilla custard peak.  It fades with coconut and toffee and finishes with salted caramel, lime, oak, mint, and a sprinkle of black pepper.

1.5 Oz. Hussong’s Platinum Tequila

2 Oz. Fresh Passion Fruit Puree

.5 Oz. Agave Nectar

1-2 Jalapeno Slices

1 Basil Leaf

Muddle Agave Nectar. Jalapeno, and Basil

Shake All Ingredients With Ice

Serve in an Ice Filled Rocks Glass
