Review: Heart of Gold Rye Vodka
Heart of Gold Rye Vodka is crafted at Toledo Spirits in a historic warehouse on the banks of the mighty Maumee River. When Andrew Newby, Lukas Kummer, and Dustin Wade founded Toledo Spirits in 2013 they had no distilling experience. Today they make 4 vodka’s, 5 rums, 2 bourbons, 2 liqueurs, moonshine, and 2 whiskeys. Heart of Gold Rye Vodka is made from Ohio grown organic rye grown on family farms, and corn. While the percent of rye and corn used is not published, a rye whiskey must be made from a minimum 51% rye. Heart of Gold Rye Vodka is distilled 8 times, then charcoal filtered. A second filtration through silver, gold, and platinum follows before bottling. The aroma leads with rye and ethanol. Additional time brings out lime and toasted coconut. The sweet lime, and soft rye bread entry is joined by boiled corn building to a milky rye peak. It fades with lime and creamed corn and finishes with lime peel, spicy rye, toasted coconut, and black pepper.
