Review: Western Reserve Organic Spelt Vodka
Western Reserve Organic Spelt Vodka is made from 100% Organic Spelt grown by Dean McIlvaine on Twin Parks Organic Farm in West Salem Ohio, 75 Miles from the distillery. Spelt is an ancient grain brought to the area by the Amish and Mennonites from Central Europe around 1890. Spelt is part of the wheat family. Western Reserve also makes a vodka distilled from organic corn, 2 gins, rum, several bourbon, rye, and whiskeys, and a blanco, reposado, and anejo agave spirit. Kevin and Ann Thomas founded Western Reserve Distillers in 2014. Their spirits are distilled on a 3000L custom Kothe Hybrid Pot Still with 2 column distillation towers and 24 plates. After the spelt is mashed and slow fermented Western Reserve Organic Spelt Vodka is distilled twice. The aroma leads with unpeeled banana, and vanilla. Additional time brings out mocha notes. The sweet vanilla and Outback Steakhouse bread entry is joined by orange building to an orange wedge and ripe banana peak. It fades with cocoa and finishes with roasted unpeeled banana, orange zest, and a sprinkle of sea salt and white pepper.
