Review: Crown Royal Blackberry

by Jeff Ellingson

Crown Royal Blackberry was just released.  Crown Royal Blended Canadian Whisky was created in 1939 as a gift for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England.  Crown Royal is made from rye, corn, and barley with 80% sourced from Manitoba and surrounding provinces and pure water from Lake Winnipeg.  600 different blends were created before selecting the Canadian whiskey blend still used today.  50 of the finest whiskies are blended to create Crown Royal.  5 different mash bills and 12 distillation columns produce the individual whiskies that comprise their blends which are then aged for varying periods of time in either new or re-use charred oak barrels.  Fresh blackberry flavor is infused with the Crown Royal Whisky base before bottling at 70 proof.  The aroma leads with fresh picked blackberry.  Additional time brings out caramel and toasted oak from the whisky base.  The sweet vanilla entry is joined by floral blackberry building to a sweet and juicy blackberry jam peak.  It fades with vanilla and caramel and finishes with tart blackberry, caramel, and oak.
