Review: Woodchuck Private Reserve Pumpkin Cider

by Jeff Ellingson

woodchuck pumpkin cider - CopyWoodchuck Private Reserve Pumpkin cider was introduced September 2010.  It was not only the world’s first pumpkin hard cider but it launched their Private Reserves line of ciders.  This line now includes their Pink, Belgium White, and Barrel Select flavors.  It is available September – November or until supply lasts since Woodchuck dedicates only 2 1/2 hours of production time each year to producing their pumpkin cider.  It is made with pumpkin sourced from individual Vermont pumpkin growers, and locally grown apples.  Woodchuck does not add any of the traditional spices typically used to create pumpkin pies or pumpkin beers.  They rely on the taste of natural pumpkin and apple, and bottle this cider at a lofty 6.9% alcohol.  Most main steam hard ciders weigh in at 5%.The cider pours to an orange caramel color with medium carbonation and a light white head.  The aroma is a lightly spiced apple with a hint of pumpkin.  The flavor enters as sweet apple building to tart before transitioning to an apple and unsweetened pumpkin peak.  It fades with a salted bittersweet apple finish.  If you are looking to be blown away with pumpkin or pumpkin pie flavor you will be disappointed.  If you are concerned about the higher alcohol content it is barely noticeable.
