Review: Firefly Apple Pie Moonshine

by Jeff Ellingson

firefly apple pie - CopyFirefly Apple Pie Moonshine is one of six flavors they launched their line of moonshine with in March 2013.  They have since added blackberry, a flavor they originally only sold on site.  It is made on Wadmalaw Island, 30 miles south of Charleston South Carolina.  This distillery opened in 2006 and it was made famous in 2008 when they introduced the first and in my opinion best tasting hand made sweet tea flavored vodka.  Firefly moonshine is made with corn, barley, wheat, sugar, and natural flavors in two 300 gallon home made pot stills.  To handle demand outside of South Carolina Firefly moonshine is produced and bottled by Sazerac in Frankfort Kentucky. It pours to a golden apple juice color.  The aroma is fresh baked apple with cinnamon and notes of pie crust and corn.  The initial flavor is genuine cinnamon apple pie, building to an apple flavored corn whiskey with a hint of pie crust peak.  There is a mild mouth warming before a cinnamon apple finish.  Firefly Apple Pie Moonshine has replicated a true apple pie tasting experience without being too sweet or forgetting that it is a moonshine.  Even at 60.3 proof this is smooth enough to drink on the rocks, and it shows Firefly is more interested in creating the best tasting apple pie flavored moonshine than rounding up or down to the nearest whole number.
