Review: Deep Eddy Vodka
Deep Eddy vodka was introduced May 2011. Unlike most vodka distillers Deep Eddy launched the company with a flavored vodka when Clayton Christopher and Chad Auler the founders of Sweet Leaf Tea, and Savvy Vodka, crafted Deep Eddy Sweet Tea and released it in 2010. While they now create five vodkas, all start with their unflavored vodka base. Deep Eddy is made with sweet corn and spring water from deep aquifers in Texas Hill country. It is column distilled ten times in a 20 foot column still, and slowly filtered six times over charcoal. They recently moved to a 30,000 square foot distillery in Dripping Springs Texas. The aroma is corn, alcohol, and a hint of black licorice. In my mouth the feel is soft and creamy. The flavor builds to a sweet corn influenced peak, before fading with a little heat and charcoal flavor. The finish is dry, with a salty mineral water finish. Unlike their flavored vodka’s, where the flavor leaps from the glass, Deep Eddy takes the approach of less is more. This is a smooth vodka that works well on ice as a sipper, with soda and a squeeze of lime, or in your favorite vodka cocktail.
