Review: Oronoco Rum

by Jeff Ellingson

Oronoco Rum - CopyOronoco rum is made with Brazilian Mountain sugar cane that is crushed within 24 hours of being hand cut.  It is triple distilled in a combination of copper pot stills and column stills.  The rum is then blended with aged Venezuelan rum that was made with molasses.  After resting in Brazilian Amendam hardwood casks, pure water is added to reduce to 80 proof.  The unique bottle features a leather wrap around map of Brazil. The aroma is vanilla, caramel, and molasses.  The creamy caramel entry is joined by vanilla building to a citrus apple peak.  Oronoco fades with spicy wood and vanilla flavor.  Sugar cane and a touch of unripe banana taste arrive with a mild sting, and a spot of sugar cane rum heat on the finish.  Oronoco is one of the few white rums that is smooth, and tasty enough to serve on the rocks.
