Review: Godiva Chocolate Liqueur

by Jeff Ellingson

Godiva Chocolate LiqueurGodiva Chocolate Liqueur is one of three chocolate liqueurs in their current product line.  White Chocolate, and Dark Chocolate are the other two.  At one time they also created a Milk Chocolate, Mocha, and Caramel flavored liqueur.  The Godiva Chocolatier Company was founded in Belgium in 1926 and it was sold to Campbell Soup in 1967, who sold to the Yildiz Holding Company, the largest consumer goods manufacturer in Turkey in 2007.  The brand is named for Lady Godiva. It pours to a chocolate milk color.  The aroma is premium chocolate with an alcohol backing.  The sweet milk chocolate entry is creamy but not thick.  The chocolate flavor builds in intensity becoming more dark chocolate and cocoa with alcohol flavor arriving at the midpoint.  There is a slight burn on the finish but very little heat and no sting.  Served on the rocks Godiva will complete a great meal, and the rich chocolate taste will pair nicely with vodka for a decadent chocolate martini.
