Review: Truly Spiked and Sparkling Pomegranate

by Jeff Ellingson

Truly Spiked and Sparkling Pomegranate Image - CopyTruly Spiked and Sparkling Pomegranate is one of three hard seltzer flavors recently introduced by the Boston Beer Company.  The other flavors include Grapefruit and Pomelo, and Colima Lime.  With the meteoric rise of hard soda, and carbonated water sales doubling over the last three years, this stable mate of the Samuel Adams, Angry Orchard, and Twisted Tea brands is betting big on hard seltzer being the next big thing.  Truly Pomegranate is made with filtered water, alcohol made from cane sugar, natural flavors, cane sugar, citric acid, and Mandarina hops.   The aroma is pomegranate and grape bubblegum.  The subtle pomegranate entry is overwhelmed by seltzer taste before building to a pomegranate and grape peak.  The semidry finish leaves a bittersweet  aftertaste.  I am not a seltzer drinker.  I look for more fruit flavor and less seltzer flavor in my soft drink and mixing options.  That said, seltzer drinkers will find more to like with Truly Spiked and Sparkling Pomegranate, because I find it very seltzer like in feel and flavor.  There really is no beer taste or alcohol presence.
