Review: Playa Real Silver Tequila

Playa Real Silver Tequila was released May 2018 along with Playa Real Pineapple, and Playa Real Mandarin.  Playa Real doesn’t quite qualify as a celebrity owned tequila brand, it was launched by Matt Davis and Auturo Vargas.  I say not quite because Matt is the husband of Fashion Designer, and Jewelry Store Owner Kendra Scott.  Matt and Auturo worked together at Heineken for ten years before creating the brand.  Playa Real is produced at La Cofradia.  This is one of the most prolific distilleries.  They currently produce nearly 70 tequila brands including Casa Noble, 512, Ja Ja, Tequila Mi Campo, and Astral Tequila.  Playa Real is handcrafted using a precise triple distillation process. Review: Casa Mexico Silver Tequila

Casa Mexico Silver Tequila is crafted at El Nacimiento Distillery, a family owned and operated establishment spanning 5 generations with over 100 years of experience growing  agave and distilling tequila.  The brand was founded by Don Buccio who has partnered with actor Mario Lopez, and Champion Boxer Oscar De La Hoya.  Don’s journey began in 1999 when he purchased some of the best quality agave plants in Jalisco Mexico.  He has spent over 20 years perfecting his vision and creating this premium tequila brand.    The agave is estate grown for 8 years on the land Don Buccio acquired 20 years ago in Arandas, located in the Highland region of Jalisco.  Once harvested the agave is slow baked in clay ovens, naturally fermented, and double distilled in stainless steel pot stills.    Read more »

Review: Los Sundays Blanco Tequila

Los Sundays Blanco Tequila is one of three expression produced under the Los Sundays label.  They also craft a Reposado and Coconut Blanco.  My regular readers may recall my previous reviews of Los Sundays Reposado and Blanco Tequila.  At that time their Blanco was infused with coconut flavor.  Los Sundays has redesigned their packaging and Los Sundays Blanco is now unflavored.  I will later review Los Sundays Coconut Blanco Tequila.  My hope is they haven’t changed their original formula.  Los Sundays Blanco is made from hand selected sustainably farmed 100% Blue Weber agave grown in both the Highland and Lowland region for 8-12 years.  A minimum 23 sugar brix is required before harvesting.  The distillery has secured relationships with the agave growers to ensure consistency.  Destiladora del Valle de Tequila is positioned over a running volcano river where the water is used in the distillation.  The agave is slow cooked in stone ovens for 24-48 hours using steam.  The extracted juice is fermented with a proprietary yeast strain from Germany for 48-72 hours before it is double distilled. Review: Siempre Plata Tequila

Siempre Plata Tequila was first released September 2015 when Co-Founders Alex Lacroix, Monica Sanita and Chris Matte sold their first batch of 150 cases in their home Province of Ontario Canada.  Alex and Monica had visited and communicated with dozens of tequila distilleries before selecting Master Distiller Agustin Rodriquez to craft their tequila at Destilador del Valle de Tequila. It is made from 100% agave grown for 8 years, with equal portions grown in the Highland and Lowland regions.  Once trimmed the pinas are slow baked for 56 hours.  The extracted juice is fermented in open air stainless steel tanks.  The spirit is double distilled in alambique pot stills and blended with volcanic spring water to reduce to 80 proof. Review: Clase Azul Plata Tequila

Clase Azul Plata Tequila is made with 100% organic Tequilana Weber blue agaves grown for a minimum of 9 years.  The pinas are cooked in old-fashioned brick ovens for 72 hours.  Once cooled they are crushed to extract the juice which is blended with a proprietary yeast and fermented in open steel vats.  The spirit is double distilled in copper alembic stills.  Water refined in a five step process is married with the tequila.  A triple filtration follows before bottling at 80 proof.  Speaking of the bottle, over 100 artisans dedicate their time to creating each 14 inch tall Clase Azul bottle, one at a time.  Clase Azul had been produced at NOM 1416.  It is now produced at Casa Tradicion, NOM 1595.  For the record I am reviewing a bottle crafted at NOM 1595. Review: Santo Fino Blanco Tequila

Santo Fino Blanco Tequila was created by Rocker Sammy Hagar, Chef Guy Fieri, and Third Generation Master Distiller Juan Eduardo Nunez at the famed El Viejito Distillery.  The distillery was founded in 1937.  Sammy worked with Juan years ago when they created Cabo Wabo tequila.  It is made from 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the Jalisco Highlands.  This is the follow up to their successful Santo Puro Mezquila, a blend of tequila and mezcal.  Availability is currently limited and no production details have been released, but the three parties involved in its creation warranted some detective work and we were finally able to track down a bottle. Review: Villa One Silver Tequila

Villa One Silver Tequila was recently released.  Distribution is still limited.  The brand was developed by Nick Jonas and John Varvatos who were inspired during a trip to Mexico in 2018 with family and friends.  This is where Nick first coined the phrase “life as it should be.”  Those words now appear on each bottle of Villa One Tequila.  After collaborating on men’s fragrance and fashion lines, Nick and John partnered with Stoli, and Master Distiller Arturo Fuentes, “The Godfather of Tequila”, to create Villa One.  It is crafted at Fabrica de Tequilas Finos, a distillery Stoli acquired in 2016.  The spirit is made from 100% Weber Blue agave grown for 5-7 years in both the Highland and Lowland region, and fresh well water drawn from their own artesian wells.
