Review: Kula Toasted Coconut Rum
Kula Toasted Coconut Rum is crafted at Hawaii Sea Spirits. The distillery operates on an 80 acre organic farm in Kula, (upcountry) Maui Hawaii. They also produce Kula Dark Rum, Kula Organic Rum, and Ocean Organic Vodka. The rum brand was formerly sold as Deep Island Rum. Only the name has changed. Kula Toasted Coconut Rum was initially only available in Hawaii. Now that it is available on the mainland I was lucky enough to score a bottle. Kula Toasted Coconut is formulated with Kula Organic Rum, which is distilled from organic sugar cane and is gluten free. The sugar cane is grown on the 80 acres surrounding the distillery. Deep ocean mineral water sourced from 3000 feet below sea level is blended to reduce to proof. The rum is flavored with natural caramelized coconut sugars. Natural caramel is added for consistent color. Read more
Review: Coconut Cartel Special
Coconut Cartel Special was inspired by a Miami favorite. Fresh cold coconuts spiked with premium Guatemalan dark rum. It is made from premium Guatemalan anejo rum. Guatemalan rum is made from fermented virgin sugar cane syrup. The rum is distilled in copper column stills and is solera-style aged in new charred American white oak barrels for between four and twelve years. The rum is proofed down to 40% alcohol with fresh coconut water before bottling. The Coconut Cartel brand was created by Mike and Dani Zig who were born in Miami to Latin parents. They grew up living between Miami, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Their first venture included smuggling coconuts in their suitcases from islands off the coast of El Salvador and selling them directly to Miami Beach’s best hotels. These coconuts were stamped with the Coconut Cartel or specific resort logo, and served with added alcohol. These coconut cocktails were quit popular. Coconut Cartel Special is an extension of this brand. Read more

Review: Big Five Coconut Rum
Big Five Coconut Rum is one of three rums crafted at St Petersburg Distillery under the Big Five Label. The other two are Big 5 Silver, and Big 5 Gold Rum. Big Five Rum is named for the five grand social clubs that thrived in Havana in the 1950’s. For the record those clubs included The Vedado Tennis Club, Miramar Yacht Club, Biltmore Yacht and Country Club, Havana Yacht Club, and Casino Espanol. Big 5 rum is made from sugar cane molasses sourced from South Florida sugar growers. The rum is column distilled four times and pot distilled once. Review: Blackmask Island Coconut Spiced Pacific Rum
Blackmask Island Coconut Spiced Pacific Rum is one of 4 rum varieties produced by United Winery and Distillery in Nakhon Pathom Thailand. The other varieties include Original Spiced, Black Premo, and Tropical Chai. Each starts with a cask aged pacific rum base. Island spices and coconut are infused with that rum base in creating Blackmask Island Coconut. Coconut rum may be synonyms with the Caribbean, but the coconut is native to Asia, so it’s only natural a distillery in Thailand would make a coconut rum of their own. Read more
