Review: Don Q Coco Rum

Don q coco - CopyDon Q Coco rum is one of four flavored rums produced in Puerto Rico by the Serralles family where they have been distilling rum since 1865.  The Don Q brand is named for Don Quixote the literary character from the families favorite novel.  After a decades long absence from the US market Don Q was re-launched in 2006.  Don Q Coco starts with sugarcane which is crushed and boiled to create molasses.  The molasses is combined with water from the Rio Inabon and a proprietary yeast which starts the fermentation process.  The rum is then distilled to remove unwanted elements before a minimum one year of aging in American White Oak Barrels.  The rum is then charcoal filtered before only natural ingredients including rich coconut are infused before bottling at 21% alcohol on site at the distillery.
