Review: Naked Turtle White Rum

naked-turtle-withe-rum-image-copyNaked Turtle White Rum was launched by Diageo in 2012 to compete with Bacardi.  It is distilled five times with sugarcane molasses and the pristine water of the Virgin Islands, at the same St. Croix distillery where Captain Morgan is made.  The Naked Rum Company thinks that rum, like life is best enjoyed naked.  That’s why Naked Turtle Rum never touches the inside of an oak barrel.  Naked Turtle has a partnership with the Sea Turtle Conservancy, a group that works for the long term survival of the sea turtle. Review: Wicked Dolphin Coconut Rum

wicked-dolphin-coconut-rum-copyWicked Dolphin Coconut Rum was released November 2014.  It was originally only available at the Wicked Dolphin Distillery in Cape Coral Florida, but after quickly selling all 250 cases they knew they were on to something.  It is one of three rums they currently craft with 100% Florida sugar grown 35 minutes from the distillery.  While Florida may be best known for their orange groves, over half of the sugar cane produced in the US is grown in Florida.  The rum is small batch distilled  in an American built Copper Pot Still.  Real coconut water and natural ingredients are then blended before bottling at 60 proof. Review: Lola Belle Cherry Rum

lola-belle-cherry-rum-copyLola Belle Cherry Rum is named for a legendary burlesque dancer who adorned herself with cherries on stage.  It is made with Caribbean rum and infused with dark maraschino cherries.  Lola Belle Cherry Rum is a rum I have seen on many a liquor store shelf, but the $19.99 price and several options I felt at the time were better, prevented me from picking up a bottle.  I purchased this bottle for $12.99.  After finding the www.lolarum.com site no longer active, and Lola Belle no longer appearing on the Proximo webpage, I have concluded this rum is not longer produced.  I still see it on liquor store shelves and I picked up my bottle yesterday.  That said at some point supply will be limited. Review: Havana Club Anejo Blanco Puerto Rican Rum

havana-club-anejo-blanco-puerto-rican-rum-copyHavana Club Anejo Blanco Puerto Rican Rum is one of two rums created by Bacardi under the Havana Club label.  Havana Club Rum is an iconic rum first produced in Cuba by the Arechabala family, who started making rum in 1878.  In 1934 they registered the Havana Club name.  Prior to the Cuban Revolution Bacardi and Havana Club where the Coke and Pepsi of Rum in Cuba.  Since then Bacardi moved to Puerto Rico and Havana Club was confiscated by the Cuban Government.  Havana Club rum has been sold globally except for the US, since 1994 when a 50/50 ownership deal was agreed to between the Cuban government and Pernod Ricard, the worlds second largest spirits company.  Havana Club Anejo Blanco is based on the original recipe personally transcribed and sold to Bacardi as part of an agreement between the two family companies.  Pernod Richard disputes the validity of Bacardi producing rum under the Havana Club name, and this has been tied up in US courts for years.  A final verdict is expected in 2017.  Until then Bacardi can still produce and sell their version of Havana Club in the US.  Havana Club Anejo Blanco Rum is made from the finest sugarcane molasses, distilled and aged for 1 year in oak barrels.  Each barrel of rum is filtered and then blended together before it is then aged for at least 2 additional months in oak barrels before bottling at 80 proof.    Read more »

Review: Jumbie Pineapple Splash

Jumbie Pineapple SplashJumbie Pineapple Splash is one of four flavor infused rums made with a blend of barrel aged rum distilled in Panama by the Jumbie Trading Company.  The other flavors include Coconut, Vanilla, and Mango.  Bottled at 48 proof with a splash of natural pineapple flavor, Jumbie Pineapple Splash is priced to compete with the Malibu, Cruzan, and Captain Morgan Pineapple flavored rums.  While it may be a little harder to find than those big International Brands, if it tastes as good as the previously reviewed Jumbie Coconut Splash, it may be worth the time spent searching for it. Review: Jumbie Coconut Splash

Jumbie Coconut SplashJumbie Coconut Splash is made with a blend of barrel aged rum distilled in Panama, and a splash of natural coconut flavor.  It is one of 4 flavor infused rums made by the Jumbie Trading Company as an homage to the spirit of the island of St Maarten.  The other flavors include Pineapple, Vanilla, Mango.  They also produce Rum Jumbie, a Caribbean Rum based liqueur infused with natural passion fruit flavor.  Originally named Rum Jumbie Coconut Splash it has been rebranded without the Rum in the brands name.  The name Jumbie comes from Caribbean lore.  It was believed in the caves of a remote Caribbean Island was a well sought after rum recipe.  It remained hidden for a long time as the natives feared entering the mysterious alcoves in the belief that Jumbies or spirits would possess anyone who found the recipe causing them to dance all night long.  Jumbie Splash is a tribute to that rediscovered recipe.
