Review: Embajador Platinum Tequila

Embajador Platinum Tequila is made from 100% Weber Blue agave grown for 8-10 years on their estate located in Atotonilco, in the Highland Region of Jalisco.  A portion of the agave is slow cooked in adobe ovens for 30 hours and then rested for 12 hours.  Another portion is steam baked in autoclaves.  The agave is first shredded.  Rollers then squeeze out the juice.  The extracted juice ferments in open steel vats for three to five days and is double distilled in traditional pot stills.  The spirit rests for 40 days in steel vats before bottling. Review: Mi Campo Blanco Tequila

Mi Campo Blanco Tequila was launched November 2018 by Constellation Brands.  Mi Campo Reposado was also released.  Mi Campo translates to “my field”.  The bottles label illustrated by Mexico City artist Raul Urias depicts the passion for the art of creating tequila, and pride of the land.  Mi Campo is not Constellation’s first tequila.  They also produce Casa Noble and Black Box Tequila.  The Constellation brand stable, also includes Corona Beer, Svedka Vodka, Robert Mondavi Wines, and High West Whiskey.  Mi Campo starts with 100% blue weber agave harvested for 7 years.  The pinas are slow cooked for 38 hours.  A unique method of squeezing the cooked pinas to release the juice instead of crushing with a Tahona stone is designed to eliminate flavors of bitterness.  The juice is fermented for 3 to 5 days in open stainless steel tanks allowing aromatics from local mango and citrus trees to influence the flavor.  The spirit is rested in French oak barrels once used to mature Napa Valley Chardonnay wine, for three weeks prior to bottling.  Read more »

Review: 1921 Crema De Mexico

1921 Crema De Mexico was introduced into the US in 2005.  1921 is named to commemorate the end of the Mexican Revolution.  It is crafted from 1921 Blanco Tequila, Mexican cream, a blend of Mexican flavors including vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa, and caramel.  A dash of coffee is added prior to bottling at 30 proof.  1921 Blanco is a premium tequila made from Highland Region estate grown Weber Blue agave.  After hand selecting the agave, the pinas are sliced, then slow cooked for 72 hours, fermented with a proprietary yeast, and double distilled.  As someone who thinks most things are better with cream, I’m anxious to see how 1921 Crema De Mexico tastes.   Read more »

Review: Tequila Honor Del Castillo Reflexion Blanco

Tequila Honor Del Castillo Reflexion Blanco is named for and owned by Mexican actress Kate del Castillo.  If the name sounds familiar she made the network news after helping Sean Penn set up a meeting with Joaquin ” El Chapo” Guzman to discuss making a film of his life.  This meeting led to his capture and arrest.  Honor Del Castillo Reflexion is crafted in partnership with the Vivanco Family, a fourth generation of agave growers, and producers of high quality tequila.  It is made from 100% estate grown agave.  The pina’s are cooked in traditional clay ovens and slow fermented with a proprietary yeast, then double distilled in small copper pot stills.      Read more »

Review: Hermosa Casagave Silver Tequila

Hermosa Casagave Silver Tequila is crafted by Master Distiller Augstine Sanchez at Destilera Leyros S.A.  Hermosa is a Spanish word that translates to beautiful.  Hermosa Casagave Silver is made from hand selected and hand harvested 100% Tequilana Weber Blue agave grown for 10 years in volcanic soil from the dormant Volcan de Tequila in the Highland region of Jalisco, 1200 meters above sea level.  The spirit is double distilled in small batches using half the energy, and 60% of the water used at other distilleries.  The pure spring water used in every step of production is drawn from natural aquifers that are over 200 feet deep.  PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING REVIEW IS FOR HERMOSA CASAGAVE SILVER TEQUILA.  We recently received a message from their producer that they changed everything about this tequila except the Hermosa name.  It is currently produced at Tequilas Las Americas NOM 1480.  The new formula includes organic agave.  It comes with a new name and bottle design.  This will prevent confusion when tequila shopping.  The new name is Hermosa Organic Tequila Silver.  Early feedback is the new formula tastes even better than the original.  We hope to get our hands on a bottle soon and we will share our thoughts. Review: Los Sundays Reposado Tequila

The idea for Los Sundays was originally sparked by a home made liqueur 3 friends including Mitchell Hayes, Founder and President of Los Sundays found from a street vendor during a trip to Tijuana.  After falling in love with this agave based liqueur they started playing with the thought of creating a tequila with similar flavor attributes.  Soon after they jumped on a plane, flew to Jalisco, and made their way to the city of Tequila.  They developed a relationship turned partnership with a family owned distillery with unique signature distilling techniques that was as passionate about creating this tequila as they were.  After a few months of sampling, refining and bringing back bootlegged sample bottles for friends to taste.  They found the final ingredient that makes Los Sundays so special, a natural coconut extract, which is added in the last 8 hours of distilling.  Not a flavoring syrup, and not added after the fact.  This ensures the flavor is subtle yet present and most importantly still allows the agave to be the dominate flavor.  Los Sundays Reposado Tequila is made from hand selected sustainably farmed 100% Blue Weber agave grown in both the Highland and Lowland region for between 8-12 years.  It is double distilled and aged for 12 months in oak barrels. Review: Los Sundays Blanco Tequila

Los Sundays was established in 2016 on the principles of quality, originality, and style.  Los Sundays Blanco Tequila was released September 2017 along with Los Sundays Reposado.  The tequila is crafted at Destiladora del Valle de Tequila where the distillery is positioned over a running volcano river system where the water can be used in the distilling process.  Los Sundays is made from hand selected sustainably farmed 100% Blue Weber agave grown in both the Highland and Lowland Region for between 8-12 years.  A minimum of 23 sugar brix per agave is required before selecting, to ensure premium smoothness and flavor.  The distillery has secured relationships with agave farmers in the Highland and Lowland Regions to ensure consistent quality.  The agave is slow cooked in “hornos”, above ground stone ovens for between 24-48 hours using steam.  The Molino’s then crush the agave and extract the juice.  A proprietary yeast strain from Germany is added in a fermentation process that lasts 48-72 hours.  Los Sundays is double distilled.  In the final stages of the distillation process a signature natural coconut extract is added and left to distill for the final 8 hours.  The natural coconut extract is added before the distillation process is finished to maintain smoothness while still enabling bright, crisp agave flavors to sit foremost in the flavor profile.  Distribution is currently limited to California but Los Sundays Blanco Tequila is available to order online at http://www.hitimewine.net Read more »
