He collaborated with Ethan Wayne the youngest son of John Wayne in developing and founding Duke Spirits. Duke’s whiskey lineup now includes Dukes Kentucky Straight, Grand Cru, and Double Barrel Rye. Review: YeYo Silver Tequila
YeYo Silver Tequila was founded by Jon Bullinger in 2010. Jon traversed the Highlands of Arandas and came upon a family run farm harvesting agave. After testing, tasting and scoring hundreds of tequila in search of the perfect combination of citrus agave and pepper Jon selected Feliciano Vivanco y Asociados to produce YeYo Silver Tequila. This distillery makes several tequilas including Don Weber, Tequila Cabeza, and Tequila Honor del Castillo. YeYo is made from single estate 100% Blue Agave that is slow roasted for 72 hours in traditional brick ovens. After fermenting for 200 hours with a serenade of Spanish classical music playing to relax the juice it is double distilled in copper pot stills. YeYo is a tequila that had been on our radar for years. Initially it was only available in Oregon. Texas was added but by 2014 it was gone. It reappeared near the end of 2019 with expanded distribution, and a new bottle. The tequila itself remained the same and it is still produced at NOM 1414. Read more
Review: Suavecito Blanco Tequila
Suavecito Blanco Tequila was launched in 2011 by Bill Foss. In 2002 after selling his business in Chicago Bill purchased an agave farm in the Highland Region of Jalisco with the intent to only farm the land. After the US recession of 2008 and 2009 when he struggled to sell his agave, Bill decided to create his own tequila. Bill worked with his son and Destiladora Los Magos to craft a tequila to Bills specifications and flavor profile. Suavecito is currently produced by Tequila Orendain de Jalisco. In the US tequila must be bottled at a minimum 80 proof. In Mexico tequila is primarily bottled between 35 and 38% alcohol. In order to create a tequila Mexican style Suavecito is bottled at 35%. Proof strength is not the only thing that sets Suavecito apart from other tequilas. Suavecito is made from estate grown agave grown in the red soil of the mountains of Jalisco Mexico at a 7000 foot altitude. Once distilled 2% blue agave nectar is blended with the tequila before bottling at 70 proof. Because Suavecito is sold as a 100% Blue Agave Tequila with agave nectar added they get around the 80 proof US minimum tequila proof restriction. Read more
Review: Tequila Dinastia Real Plata
Tequila Dinastia Real Plata is one of 5 Dinastia Real tequila expressions produced at Tequila Selecto de Amatitan. The others include a Reposado, Anejo, Extra Anejo, and Extra Anejo Cristalino. Some of the other tequilas made at this distillery include Manik, Blue Nectar, Asom Broso, and Insolente. According to their Facebook page Tequila Dinastia Real Plata is bottled immediately after distillation. Their website claims it is aged for 45 days in French oak barrels before bottling. When I sent an email to them they said after distillation they blended 90% unaged tequila with 10% Dinestria Real Extra Anejo Cristalino tequila to create Tequila Dinastia Real Plata. After tasting this tequila I will give you by thoughts as to which production method I believe is used. Dinastia Real is made from a blend of Highland and Lowland grown agave. Each bottle is hand labeled with the bottle number and date hand written on the label. As a bonus, the glass stopper doubles as a stylish shot glass once you have finished drinking the bottles contents. Read more
Review: Sesion Blanco Tequila
Sesion Blanco Tequila was introduced in Australia in 2015 by husband and wife Jennifer Hawkins and Jake Wall and their friend Tim Freeburn. While this is not the first Australian launched spirit we have reviewed, it is certainly the first Australian launched tequila we have reviewed. Sesion is now available in the US. I’m going to classify this as another celebrity owned tequila brand as Jennifer Hawkins was Miss Universe 2004, and she has appeared on Dancing with the Stars Australia, and hosted Australia’s Next Top Model. Jake Wall’s resume includes time as a Project Developer. Tim Freeburn is described as a tequila expert and friend of the couple. The threesome traveled to Mexico and partnered with members of the Beckmann Family to develop the Sesion Brand which currently includes Sesion Reposado, and Sesion Mocha. Sesion is produced and bottled at Tierra de Agaves. This distillery also produces Lunazul and Tributo Tequila. The Master Distiller is Francisco Quijano and Master Agave Farmer is Jose Fernandez. There are several things that drew me to this tequila. The back story, bottle design, and the fact that Sesion won a Double Gold Medal at the 2019 SIP Awards. I even like the name. Let’s see if Sesion Blanco lives up to my lofty expectations. Read more
