Review: Blair and Boyd Potato Vodka
Blair and Boyd Potato vodka was introduced in 2008 by Prentice Orr and Barry Young who named the vodka after a great grandfather of Orr and the father in law of Young. It is crafted in Glenshaw Pennsylvania at the former Glenshaw Glass Works plant that closed after 109 years of making glass bottles for companies including the Yuengling Brewing Company. It is made with locally grown potatoes. Who knew they grew potatoes in Pennsylvania? After the potatoes and yeast are cooked and fermented, the mix is triple distilled in a 1200 liter German built copper pot still. Only the heart of the vodka is used, and each batch is tasted before each bottle is hand filled, corked, and wax dipped before the bottle is signed and numbered. Read more

Review: Deep Eddy Vodka
Deep Eddy vodka was introduced May 2011. Unlike most vodka distillers Deep Eddy launched the company with a flavored vodka when Clayton Christopher and Chad Auler the founders of Sweet Leaf Tea, and Savvy Vodka, crafted Deep Eddy Sweet Tea and released it in 2010. While they now create five vodkas, all start with their unflavored vodka base. Deep Eddy is made with sweet corn and spring water from deep aquifers in Texas Hill country. It is column distilled ten times in a 20 foot column still, and slowly filtered six times over charcoal. They recently moved to a 30,000 square foot distillery in Dripping Springs Texas. Read more
Review: Charbay Blood Orange Vodka
Charbay Blood Orange vodka is one of 6 flavored vodka’s the Karakasevic family crafts in Napa Valley with their unflavored vodka as a base. It is crafted with Midwest grown corn and rye. They use a 660 gallon still along with a proprietary distillation process and distill to 192 proof. Pure spring water that has been filtered to 3 PPM purity is used to reduce the proof. One batch of Blood Orange is made each year with whole blood oranges grown in Central California. They are crushed whole within the first three days of picking in February each year. The flavor and color extraction process takes six months. The extraction is then gently blended with the vodka and bottled at 80 proof. Read more

Review: St George California Citrus Vodka
St George California Citrus vodka was just introduced along with their All Purpose, and Green Chili flavored vodka. If the St. George name sounds familiar it is the same distillery that combined with Ansley Coale, the President of Germain-Robin, now Craft Distillers, to create Hangar One vodka in 2001. Hangar One was sold to Proximo April 2010, but they continued to craft the vodka at their distillery in Alameda California until the summer of 2014. Now after their four year non compete is over, St George is back in the vodka crafting business. Their California Citrus is made with Valencia Oranges, Seville Oranges, and Bergamot Oranges grown on the Lindcove family ranch in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Bergamot Oranges are native to Southern Italy where over 80% are grown. The Valencia, and Seville Oranges, and the peel from the Bergamot oranges are each infused separately with a non GMO base spirit. Each is then distilled separately and then blended together. After filtering it is bottled at 80 proof. Read more

Review: Epic Cake Vodka
Epic Cake vodka is one of ten vodka flavors they create with vodka distilled in France. Epic was acquired by Sazerac, May 2012 from White Rock who after selling their Pinnacle Vodka and Calico Jack Rum line to Jim Beam, sold dozens of the remaining brands to Sazerac. While part of White Rock, I believe the vodka was distilled in Iowa and flavored in Lewiston Maine. Sazerac relaunched the brand February 2013, with vodka made with hand selected wheat from the Champagne region of France and triple distilled in the Cognac region of France. It is then flavored and bottled in the US. Read more
