Review: Karlssons Gold Vodka
Karlssons Gold vodka was introduced in the US in 2007. The idea for the brand started in 2001 when a group of local potato farmers in Cape Bjare Sweden met with their neighbor Peter Ekelund to discuss forming a co-op and possibly creating a vodka with their virgin new potatoes. A virgin new potato is a young potato that hasn’t fully developed a skin yet. Peter who 25 years earlier helped lead the launch of Absolut Vodka, enlisted the help of Borje Karlsson the former head of Product Development of the V&S Group during the development of Absolut. After a few years of trial and testing Karlsson’s Gold Vodka was launched. It is crafted with seven varietals of virgin new potatoes including Solist, Gammel Svensk Rod, Princess, Sankta Thora, Hamlet, Marine, and Celine. Each varietal is distilled once through a continuous column still lined with copper. They are then blended and unfiltered. 17 pounds of Virgin new potatoes are needed to craft one bottle of their vodka. The result is a full bodied vodka with a distinct viscosity. Read more

Dripping Springs vodka was created by brothers Gary and Kevin Kelleher. It was introduced in 2007. It is micro distilled over 20 times in small 50 gallon batches in proprietary handmade copper pot stills with sweet Mid-Western non GMO corn and pure mineral rich artesian spring water. It is then slow filtered through Swedish activated carbon before bottling at 80 proof. Read more

Pinnacle Banana vodka is one of eight vodka flavors they introduced in 2008. While Pinnacle currently features over 40 flavors on their website, Banana no longer appears, so availability is limited. Pinnacle crafts their vodka with French grown wheat and pure French spring water. Three Olives Orange vodka was introduced July 2003 with their Chocolate flavor. They were their fifth and sixth flavors. Three Olives currently has 28 flavors, with more to follow. It is quadruple distilled with English wheat and water from Lake Vyrnmy in Wales and then triple charcoal filtered at the G&J Greenalls distillery. Skyy Infusions Texas Grapefruit vodka was just launched with their Pacific Blueberry flavor. It is one of 15 flavors they now offer in their growing line of flavored vodka. Skyy crafts their vodka with Midwestern grown wheat and water filtered through reverse osmosis. They quadruple distill and triple filter their vodka through California limestone. Van Gogh Banana vodka was introduced in 2006. It is one of 22 flavored vodka’s they craft in Holland. They also create 2 unflavored vodka’s and a gin. A blend of wheat, corn, barley, and purified water is double distilled in a column still. A third distillation in a copper pot still in small batches follows. Stoli Gala Applik vodka was introduced in the summer of 2009. It is one of 17 vodka flavors they craft with wheat and pure artesian well water. It is triple distilled and filtered four times through quartz, sand, and finally charcoal from Russian birch. Natural Gala apple flavor is infused, before bottling at 70 proof. The Gala apple is the second best selling apple in the US. It was first breed in New Zealand in the 1930’s, and it is a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Kidd’s Orange Red apple. Read more
