Review: Absolut Grapefruit Vodka
Absolut Grapefruit Vodka was just released. If you thought Absolut already had a grapefruit flavored vodka, you would be correct. Absolut Ruby Red was one of the first grapefruit flavored vodka’s when in was launched in 2006. Absolut Ruby Red is still shown as available on the Absolut Vodka website. Absolut Grapefruit is crafted from a vodka base made from Swedish winter wheat sourced from 450 local farms. One Kilo of wheat is needed to create one liter of vodka. The wheat is milled onsite and blended with water and a proprietary yeast, and fermented for 2 days. A continuous distillation process is used with steel column stills and copper plates. The vodka is filtered once through a mesh filter. Pure deep well water that comes from naturally filtered aquifers is softened through reverse osmosis and then blended with the vodka to reduce to proof. All natural flavors are infused with the vodka. No sugar is added before bottling at 80 proof. The aroma is fresh peeled grapefruit with vanilla and a peppery backing. The sweet grapefruit entry has full grapefruit flavor without any added sugar. It builds to a tart grapefruit peel and creamy vanilla bean peak. The warm fade has a soft mouth feel that finishes semi-dry with a mild sting and full soft wheat vodka flavor, that leaves long lasting whole grapefruit taste. Absolut is bottled at 80 proof, and it goes down with vanilla flavor, and a crisp and peppery 80 proof finish. Comparing this to an over sweetened 60 proof grapefruit vodka, Absolut Grapefruit has more of a vodka presence. How does Absolut Grapefruit compare with Absolut Ruby Red Vodka? I poured myself a glass of Absolut Ruby Red and I tasted a balance between grapefruit and lime. The flavor intensified with notes of vanilla from the Absolut vodka base arriving at the midpoint. While I enjoyed both, Absolut Grapefruit has a dramatic burst of natural grapefruit flavor along with sweet and creamy vanilla taste. This burst of flavor will stand out in a cocktail. Absolut Ruby Red has a more balanced grapefruit and lime profile with less vodka of a vodka presence on the finish.
