Review: Angry Orchard Elderflower Cider

by Jeff Ellingson

Angry orchard elderflower - CopyAngry Orchard Elderflower cider was introduced February 2013.  It is one of two seasonal ciders made in Cincinnati Ohio by Angry Orchard, a division of The Boston Beer Company, the brewers of Sam Adams beer.  It is available April – August each year.  Their other seasonal flavor is Cinnful Apple.  While elderflower is found in several liqueurs, most notably St. Germain, this is the first cider made with elderflower.  Angry Orchard Elderflower Cider is made with US grown bittersweet and culinary apples from the Pacific Northwest and the foothills of the Northeast.  These apples are shredded and the pulp is pressed into juice.  Wine yeast is added before a lengthy fermentation process where the cider is wood aged.  Elderflower and natural flavors are added before bottling at 5% alcohol.

It pours to a lightly carbonated pale yellow color.  The aroma is floral and apple.  The flavor enters as crisp apple with fresh floral elderflower joining and building to a tart peak before fading with a semi-dry lightly bittersweet finish.  Additional sips bring out a hint of pear and while I still pick up some floral notes it is far from dominant.    Angry Orchard Elderfower is a light refreshing cider I grew to enjoy more with every sip.
