Review: AriZona Sun Rise Hard Seltzer

AriZona Sun Rise Hard Seltzer was recently released.  Here is where things get a little confusing.  It is not produced in Arizona but rather Warsaw Poland.  It is made in partnership with Heineken USA and Hornell Brewing Company an affiliated entity of Arizona Beverages.  Finally it is brewed and canned by Krynica Vitamin.  AriZona Beverages is Americas number one selling Iced Tea brand, outselling both Lipton and Snapple brands.  Had there not been a legal battle between the brands two founders, Hard Iced Tea may have been their first adult beverage.  The company was founded in 1992.  By pricing their 24 oz. can of Arizona Iced Tea at the same price as Snapple’s 16 oz. bottle, they took the market by storm.  That price in 1992 was 99 cents.  That price today is still 99 cents.  It’s curious that this time around they are selling their hard seltzer in a smaller 11.5 oz. can compared to the 12 oz. industry norm.  I’m sure this has more to do with the county producing their seltzer than any specific marketing plan.  AriZona Sun Rise Hard Seltzer is made from a sugar alcohol base, carbonated water, and honey.  Additional ingredients are flavor specific.

Arizona Sun Rise Mucho Mango Hard Seltzer: Made with 7% fruit juice including mango puree, lemon juice concentrate, and pear juice.  It pours to a cloudy mango juice color and the aroma is fresh sliced mango.  The sweet mango juice entry has a juice feel to it without the juice over sweetness I get from some fruit juice hard seltzer.  Pear arrives and is joined by lemon juice at the midpoint.  It fades with honey and finishes with a hint of olive juice tangy mango, and lemon peel taste.

AriZona Sun Rise Grapefruit Hard Seltzer: Made with 6% fruit juice including lemon juice, grapefruit juice concentrate, orange juice concentrate, and lemon juice concentrate.  It pours to a cloudy pale orange hue.  The aroma leads with orange juice.  Grapefruit and honey follows.  The lemon juice and orange juice entry builds to a blood orange peak.  It fades with white grapefruit juice followed by a long Pine Brothers Honey Cough Drop finish.

AriZona Sun Rise Cherry Punch Hard Seltzer:  Made with 8% fruit juice including cranberry juice concentrate, apple essence, apple juice concentrate, cranberry essence, cherry juice concentrate, natural flavors, and lemon juice concentrate.  It pours to a cloudy purple red color.  The aroma leads with Ocean Spray Cran-Cherry.  The sweet cherry entry is joined by juicy apple building to a cherry fruit juice punch peak.  It fades with sour cherry and finishes with tart cranberry, honey, and dried Montmorency cherries.

Grade: B

AriZona Sun Rise Lemon Hard Seltzer:  Made with 5% fruit juice including lemon juice concentrate and natural flavors.  The aroma leads with fresh squeezed lemonade.  Additional time in the glass brings out honey notes.  The sour lemon juice entry builds to a tart lemon peak.  It fades with bittersweet lemon peel and finishes with lemon peel and honey.

The Bottom Line:  While there is fruit juice flavor in all four AriZona Sun Rise varieties, the focus seemed to be more on adding juice content than crafting a true to name fruit flavor.  I can only guess the honey added to each variety was designed to enhance the fruit juice flavor, but in reality it takes on more of a lead role in the finished products.
