Review: Bacardi Coconut Rum
Bacardi Coconut rum was introduced January 2003 and was originally called Bacardi Coco. It is one of 15 flavored rums they currently create in Puerto Rico. It is made with molasses and a single unique strain of yeast, La Levadura Bacardi. Bacardi ages their rum in lightly charred American White Oak barrels before being filtered through a mix of charcoal made from tropical woods, and coconut shells before being infused with natural coconut flavor.
The aroma is a rum dominated blend of rum and coconut. The flavor enters as a soft creamy unsweetened coconut and peaks with vanilla and rum joining the coconut before a medium mouth warming and a dry finish with a rum fueled mild burn on the back of my throat. Bacardi Coconut uses the natural rum sweetness to balance the unsweetened coconut and the result is a coconut rum that is not over sweetened. At 70 proof it may be a little strong to drink on the rocks but because it is not over sweet it mixes well with sweet fruit juices.
