Review: Brinley Gold Shipwreck Coffee Rum
Brinley Gold Shipwreck Coffee rum is one of five rums made in St. Kitts, the smallest country in the Western Hemisphere, by the Brinley family. It was rebranded in 2012 to include the Shipwreck name, and repackaged to match their Spice rum bottle. The Shipwreck name honors the recent discovery of the Brimstone Hill off the coast of St. Kitts. It was a British ship sunk by the French during the battle of Frigate Bay in 1782. Brinley has been selling their column distilled rum since 2002 and they age their rum in oak bourbon barrels for four years. Natural Brazilian coffee is blended before bottling their Coffee rum at 72 proof. The aroma is equal parts coffee and rum. The sugar sweet taste feels a little syrupy in my mouth. The coffee flavored entry is not overpowering and it is soon joined by rum with a hint of vanilla and caramel and a touch of smoky oak on the fade. There is a mild mouth warming but I would expect more from a rum weighing in at 72 proof. This is a rum that starts sweet, but the sweetness softens, and the coffee flavor is not so strong as to mask the other flavors. It is smooth enough to sip on the rocks and flavorful enough to not get lost in a cocktail.
