Review: Bud Light Platinum Seltzer

by Jeff Ellingson

Bud Light Platinum Seltzer is one of four new hard seltzers released this week, just in time for Labor Day.  We recently reviewed Coors Seltzer and Bud Light Seltzer Remix.  The fourth has not made its way to our local market but we hope to be getting our hands on that one too.  Bud Light Platinum Seltzer, like Bud Light Platinum Beer at 6% alcohol, is a higher proof beverage.  Most Hard Seltzers weigh in with 4-5% alcohol and 80-110 calories.  Bud Light Platinum Seltzer tips the scales at 8% alcohol with 170 calories.  It is made with cold fermented cane sugar, natural flavors, agave, and malted rice.  It is currently available in three flavors Wild Berry, Citrus, and Blood Orange.  Bud Light Platinum Seltzer is sold in 3 flavor 6 can variety packs.

Bud Light Platinum Wild Berry Seltzer

The mixed berry aroma is led by blueberry and blackberry.  The sweet berry entry builds to a tart raspberry peak.  It fades with bittersweet berry and agave.  The finish continues with bittersweet berry and carbon seltzer flavor, with a straight vodka like alcohol feel and taste.

Grade: D+

Bud Light Platinum Citrus Seltzer

The aroma is lemon lime soda.  The sweet Lime entry builds to a tart lemon lime peak.  It fades with agave and finishes with bittersweet lime leading citrus peel and a noticeable alcohol presence.

The aroma is juicy orange.  The sweet orange entry builds to a tart blood orange peak.  It fades with agave and whole blood orange and bittersweet carbon seltzer flavor that continues through a long finish with straight vodka taste.

Grade: D+

The bottom line:  I really like the package design.  I also like the six pack three flavor packaging of Bud Light Platinum Seltzer.  With hundreds of hard seltzers on the market today made by 70 different breweries I also understand Bud Lights desire to differentiate themselves from the others with this higher octane seltzer.  My issue is more with the finished product.  When I’m looking for a seltzer I’m looking for a light refreshing beverage with natural fruit flavor.  At 170 calories Bud Light Platinum Seltzer isn’t light and the 8% alcohol finish isn’t very refreshing.

I agree. It’s not refreshing at all. My girlfriend bought these on accident, and an accident it was. I do not recommend these to anyone. I don’t recommend any underage drinking. At all. But if you’re young and dumb, still don’t buy these. Don’t waste your money. They’re horrible.
