Review: Captain Morgan Sweet Chili Lime

by Jeff Ellingson

Captain Morgan Sweet Chili Lime was recently released.  A quick glance at the Captain Morgan website shows this is the 20th Captain Morgan product.  While there are several Jalapeno Lime flavored spirits, I only know of one chili lime flavored product, Sipsmith Chili Lime Gin.  Chile Lime is a very popular flavor for chips with Sun Chips, Lays, Tostitos, and Takis all offering their take on chili lime.  There are also over a dozen companies offering chili lime bottled seasoning spice, proving chili lime is a very popular flavor combination.  Captain Morgan was first released in the US in 1984.  Captain Morgan Chili Lime is made from Carribean sugar cane molasses that is distilled once in a continuous still in St Croix.  The rum is aged in oak barrels for one year.  A proprietary blend of Caribbean spice and natural flavors are blended before bottling at 70 proof.  The aroma leads with lime and molasses.  Additional time brings out chili pepper allspice and cinnamon.  The simple syrup and lime juice entry has a syrupy mouth feel.  Molasses and spice arrive building to a sweet chili lime spiced rum peak.  It fades with simple syrup and lime juice and finishes with vanilla, cinnamon, lime peel, and chili pepper.
