Review: Casa Rica Rosado Tequila

by Jeff Ellingson

Co-Founders Justin Urich and Gilberto Lunatajoya visited 16 distilleries, and spent 4 years developing the Casa Rica Tequila brand.  They partnered with Master Distiller Zandra Gomez Santiago and Destiladora de Agave Azul.  Casa Rica Rosado is one of three tequila expression they craft distill.  It is made from 100% estate grown agave grown in the Lowland region.  Some rosado tequilas get their rose color from being aged in red wine barrels.  Other are blended with pink grapefruit juice.  Casa Rica Rosado gets its color from the pink tinted heart of the agave plant when it starts to self ferment.  The distillery extracts and macerates the spots and makes it into a dye they add in the distillation process.  It pours to a pale pink color.  The aroma leads with smoke, cooked earthy agave, vanilla, and grapefruit.  Additional time brings out floral, black pepper, and blackberry notes.  The sweet cooked agave, green vegetation, and citrus entry builds to a lemon, triple berry, and cooked agave peak.  It fades with lemon, roasted zucchini, and acai.  Finishing with lemon, mineral, saline, pepper, mint, and cooked agave.
