Review: Coco Cocktail

by Jeff Ellingson

Coco Cocktail is described as a spiked sparkling coconut water.  They also claim to be the first nutritious alcohol.  Coco Cocktail is sold in an 8 can variety pack.  The two flavors are Pomegranate Berry and Lemon Key Lime.  A quick look at the ingredient list tells me this is not your typical hard seltzer.  For starters both are made from a OTS Orange Wine base with purified water, coconut water (powdered), organic evaporated cane sugar, carbonation and Grand Fusion Powder which includes organic fruits: orange cranberry, blueberry apple, strawberry, and shitake mushroom.  In addition each of the two varieties have their own flavoring.  Pomegranate Berry has pomegranate, raspberry, and blueberry juice concentrate.  Lemon Key Lime adds lemon and key lime extract.  While most hard seltzers tout their low sugar and carb count, Coco Cocktails would rather discuss their vitamin count, with a significant amount of 11 vitamins and minerals in each 12 oz. can.

Coco Cocktails Pomegranate Berry:  It pours to a deep cranberry juice color.  The aroma leads with orange wine.  Berry and earthy mushroom follow.  The raspberry and pomegranate entry is lightly carbonated.  Coconut water, mushroom, and orange arrive building to a tart orange raspberry peak.  It fades with saline, cane sugar, and blueberry flavor, finishing with cranberry, raspberry, pomegranate, and orange peel taste.

Grade: B

Coco Cocktails Lemon Key Lime:  It pour to a lightly carbonated lemon lime soda color.  The aroma leads with key lime.  Lemon juice and orange wine follow.  The key lime entry is joined by lemon juice building to a tart citrus and orange wine peak.  While the flavor is very natural the level of carbonation gives this a flat soda feel.  It fades with cane sugar, and whole key lime and coconut water flavor.  The finish leaves cane sugar, juicy lemon, lime, and orange peel taste.

Grade: B-

The Bottom Line: Coco Cocktails is absent any carbon seltzer flavor, and while I taste fresh orange and orange peel from the OTS orange wine base, I don’t get any burn or unpleasant aftertaste.
