Review: Coors Light Summer Brew

by Jeff Ellingson

003Coors Light Summer Brew is the latest fruit flavored beer introduced by Miller-Coors.  After the successful launch of Redd’s Apple Ale they introduced Redd’s Strawberry Ale.  Smith and Forge Hard Cider soon followed.  They describe Summer Brew as a Citrus Radler.  The ingredients listed are Lager with natural citrus flavoring.  A Radler is often described as a mixed beer drink, with the most popular consisting of a 50-50 mix of beer and lemonade or beer and a lemon lime soft drink.  It is sold in 12 packs of 10 ounce cans at a price point similar to a 12 pack of Coors Light. It pours to a pale golden color with a full fluffy white head of foam.  The aroma is beer with alternating citrus scents of orange and Lemon Lime Soda.  The Seven Up flavored entry is joined by lager before fading with a slightly bitter orange, and a dry malty finish.  While Leinenkugel Summer Shandy introduced in 2007 and also owned by Miller-Coors has the clear taste of beer and lemonade, Coors Light Summer Brew has the taste of beer and Seven Up with a twist of orange peel.  A generous squeeze of an orange slice softens the bitterness and adds a natural note of freshness.
