Review: Deaths Door Vodka
Deaths Door Vodka is one of four spirits distilled in Middleton Wisconsin by the Deaths Door Spirits Company. The other three include a gin, white whiskey, and Wondermint, an artisan craft peppermint schnapps. The company is named for the passageway between Washington Island and The Door County Wisconsin Peninsula where many shipped perished throughout the years. Deaths Door vodka is crafted with a 60/40 mix of organic hard red winter wheat grown on Washington Island, and malted barley from Chilton Wisconsin. The vodka is double distilled in a 90 gallon copper pot still, hand cut, and bottled unfiltered. The aroma is malted grain with caramel and vanilla notes. The wheat, almond, and malted barley entry has a creamy feel, and a fresh bread taste. Vanilla flavor arrives, building to a caramel vanilla pasty peak. It fades with a warm tingle, followed by a sweet smooth finish somewhere between grass, caramel, and citrus. This is one of the most flavorful unflavored vodka’s I’ve tasted, and I’ve tasted quite a few. While the Deaths Door name may be a little frightening, if you taste this vodka after death, you know you have arrived in heaven.
