Review: Dented Brick Premium Straight Rye Whiskey
Dented Brick Premium Straight Rye Whiskey is made from 100% pumpernickel rye. Most rye whiskey is made from a much smaller % of rye. Some as low as 51%. Those are typically blended with corn and malted barley. At Dented Brick the rye is milled, mashed, fermented and distilled inhouse on a Vendome Copper & Brass Works still. A large portion of rye whiskey including some of the most popular brands are sourced from MGP and Alberta Distillers. I’m excited to sample a rye whiskey made both entirely in house, and made from 100% pumpernickel rye. Dented Brick rye whiskey is aged for 2 years in new American oak barrels sourced from Independent Stave Company in Lebanon Missouri. Some of these barrels have a #2, some a #3, and a few a #4 char. Once fully matured the whiskeys are blended and bottled at 80 proof. Marc Christensen opened Dented Brick Distillery in 2016 and since then they have created over a dozen spirits including Vodka, Gin, Rum, Whiskey, Tequila. The aroma leads with oak, vanilla, and wood spice. Addition time brings out caramel, warm dark rye bread, and Christmas spice. The cinnamon and brown sugar entry is joined by lemon building to a creamy caramel, vanilla, and oak peak. It fades with clove and finishes with lemon peel, rye cereal, clove, cinnamon, and oak.
