Review: Dented Brick Tequila Blanco

by Jeff Ellingson

Dented Brick Tequila Blanco was released just in time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.  Marc Christensen founded Dented Brick Distillery in 2015 with a dream of building a world class distillery in the driest state in the US.  They currently craft over a dozen spirits including vodka, gin, whiskey, and rum.  Two years ago Marc spent several weeks with a friend traveling through Tequila and Arandas Mexico looking for a partner to craft a great tequila with.  At the end of the trip they met the team at Casa Tequilera Dinastia Arandina, a historic woman owned distillery in Arandas Mexico.  This distillery has been dedicated to making craft spirits for over 250 years.  Dented Brick is a certified organic tequila made from 100% agave grown on the distillers estate in the Highland region.  It is made with traditional distillation practices.  Once distilled the spirit is shipped in stainless steel tanks to Salt Lake City where pure Rocky Mountain Snow melt, sourced from the Dented Brick artesian well is used to proof the tequila down to 80 proof.  Tequila comes off the still at 110-120 proof, so with up to 1/3 of the bottles content being water used for proofing, you can see how important the water used to proof the tequila is.  The aroma leads with roasted agave.  Additional time brings out steamed zucchini, vanilla, lime, and black pepper.  The roasted agave entry has a fresh organic agave taste.  Lime arrives building to a lime and agave peak.  It fades with more of the same and finishes with lime peel, sea salt, black pepper, vanilla, and roasted agave.  At a time when several Blanco tequilas have crossed the $100 a bottle price line its nice to find a tequila that only tastes ultra premium.
