Review: Don Julio Tequila Blanco

by Jeff Ellingson

Don Julio Blanco - CopyDon Julio Tequila Blanco was launched in 1987 and it is generally thought of as the first luxury tequila.  Don Julio is named after Don Julio Gonzalez who began distilling tequila when he was 17 at his uncles distillery.  In 1942 he borrowed money from a local businessman to open his own distillery.  In 2014 Diageo acquired Don Julio.  Don Julio Blanco is the base for all of their tequilas and it is made with 100% Blue Weber agave from the Highlands of Jalisco.  They slow roast the agave for 72 hours and their tequila is double distilled in stainless steel pot stills. The aroma leads with citrus and roasted artichoke.  In my mouth there is a soft oily feel.  The sweet and creamy agave has a roasted flavor with vanilla arriving and building to a citrus and pineapple peak.  It fades with artichoke flavor, a little heat, and a sprinkle of pepper.
