Review: Don Q Cristal Rum
Don Q Cristal rum was introduced in 1978. While Bacardi is the worlds best selling rum, DonQ is the best selling rum in Puerto Rico, where both are produced. Don Q began distilling rum in 1865, but after a decades long absence in the US, they re-launched the brand for US distribution in 2006. It is made with the finest molasses, fresh volcanic mountain water from the Rio Inabon, and a unique strain of yeast kept active and in use for over 75 years. After fermentation the rum is distilled five times before being aged 1 1/2 to 5 years in American White Oak Barrels. After blending, it is charcoal filtered before bottling on site at 80 proof. The aroma is vanilla and banana with a sugar cane alcohol backing. The flavor is banana, vanilla, and coconut cream. I pick up a hint of caramel at the midpoint, before fading with some heat and a dry citrus finish. While I don’t pick up any rum burn as I swallow, there is some heat with and sting on the finish.

Good value rum, but that recipe for a Mai Tai? It’s not even close to being a Mai Tai.
Over the years I have had several Mai Tai’s and no two taste the same. I do agree the Don Q recipe is a little different than any I have tried. When posting reviews I usually select one of the drink recipes posted on the company’s web site. After receiving your comment I pulled up the Don Q site and I see they have changed their recipe a little so I updated my post to include that recipe. It is closer to what I have had in the past. While the original Mai Tai was made without pineapple juice, it seems most Mai Tai’s I’ve had recently now include it. Do you have a favorite Mai Tai recipe you can share?
