El Tesoro Platinum Tequila was introduced in 1990. It is made by Carlos Camarena, a third generation Master Distiller at La Altena Distillery. This distillery has been open since 1937. The 100% Estate grown blue agave is hand selected and slow steamed in a stone oven for 36 hours. The pinas are then cooled for 36 hours before they are crushed by a one ton stone wheel. The juice and pulp are fermented with wild yeast for 7-10 days in a wooden vat. The tequila is double distilled in small batches in a copper still. El Tesoro is one of the few tequilas that is distilled to 80 proof so no water is added to reduce to proof. This results in a fuller more pure flavor. The tequila is hand bottled and labeled. The aroma is green olive, vanilla, earthy agave, and citrus. The sweet agave entry is joined by vanilla and then olive taste and builds to a sweet citrus zest with a hint of butterscotch peak. It fades with a warm peppery sting and finishes with a dry olive and earthy agave taste and oily feel. While El Tesoro is one of the sweetest tasting 100% agave blanco tequilas I’ve tasted, it finishes with far more briny olive taste.
